March 23rd by Chad Shmukler

A Family Adventure Without the Crowds

Looking for an unforgettable family vacation? Patagonia Baker Lodge, located in the Aysen region of Chilean Patagonia on the outskirts of the world-famous Patagonia National Park, excels at catering to families looking to plan a multi-activity family adventure amongst some of the planet’s most stunning landscapes. Easily tailored to all ages and experience levels, guests of Patagonia Baker Lodge can embark each day for a diverse menu of active adventures.

The lodge can accommodate families or groups up to 12 and can tailor your trip from an almost endless list of fully included** guided activities and experiences.

Home Base

You and your family will return each evening to the luxury of the lodge, which overlooks the magnificent Rio Baker and offers some of the most breathtaking views you’ll find from any adventure lodge on the planet. Constructed in 2023 and catering to no more than 12 guests per week, the lodge is spacious yet intimate and welcoming. Natural Chilean hardwoods form the backbone of the lodge, while modern features like radiant heat floors add comfort and warmth. Sip a drink on the lodge’s expansive deck, enjoy the great room, or cozy up next to the lodge’s beautiful fireplace, adorned floor-to-ceiling with rocks from the riverbed. Enjoy vistas of the Baker from almost every room in the lodge — including yours, as every one of the lodge’s guestrooms offers river views.

Fly Fishing

Patagonia is known across the globe for its world-class fly fishing. Each year, Patagonia Baker Lodge hosts anglers from all over the world who come in search of the trophy brown and rainbow trout found in the rivers, streams and lakes of the Rio Baker region. With excellent opportunities for everyone from first-time fly fishers to expert anglers, the Baker River and other nearby waters offer something for all ages and skill levels

Hiking and Trekking

Patagonia National Park and several other nearby national parks and preserves offer easy access to some of the most beautiful hikes in the Andes. Whether you’re a highly active, experienced hiker or prefer something a bit more tame, there is a nearly endless menu of breathtaking hikes to embark on from the lodge.

Marble Cave Tours

Once formed of limestone which was long ago transformed through ancient metamorphic processes into marble, the Marble Caves sit almost on the shores of Chile’s largest lake, Lago General Carrera. The caves are a very popular natural wonder for visitors to the area and day tours to the cave are a common excursion from Patagonia Baker Lodge. Viewed from the lake, the caves are a geologic marvel which leave most visitors in awe of their size and form. The real show, however, is within the caves where tours travel by boat and where a stunning lightshow takes place on the caves’ walls thanks to brilliant, constantly changing and shifting reflections from the lake’s turquoise waters.

Kayaking the marble caves.

Kayaking

Options for kayaking from the lodge abound. The Rio Baker offers excellent whitewater kayaking for all skill levels. Embark directly from the shores of the upper Baker River in front of the lodge for a guided kayaking trip that can be tailored to beginning or intermediate kayakers. If you’re a more experienced kayaker, you can take a more adrenaline-inducing run down the Baker’s canyon section with a highly experienced whitewater kayaking guide that knows every rapid and run in the river. Want a kayaking outing for the whole family? Look no further than a guided tour of the aforementioned Marble Caves, which many say are ideally explored via kayak.

Rafting down Rio Baker.

Whitewater Rafting

In addition to kayaking, the Baker River also offers excellent whitewater rafting opportunities. Groups head out from Puerto Bertrand with an experienced whitewater rafting guide for an exhilarating paddle down the turquoise waters of the Baker River. With a mix of exciting rapids and placid, slow-flowing sections, rafting the Baker River is well suited to all ages and skill levels. No prior whitewater experience is required.

Horseback riding for all skill levels.

Horseback Riding

For equestrians, the Rio Baker and nearby valleys offer a diverse menu of horseback riding options. Head to a nearby Chilean estancia, where you’ll saddle up an embark on a horseback ride through the mountains to enjoy stunning vistas of the Andes and surrounding valleys. Rides for all skill levels, from first-timers and intermediate riders to highly experienced riders are available.

National Park Tours

There’s more to see and do in the national parks than just hiking, and the lodge’s guided tours are an ideal way to see the parks. With a mix of sightseeing, light trekking, exploration, and visits to park exhibits and centers, visitors will see the best that each of the region’s national parks have to offer.

Tour the Confluence

The confluence of the Rio Nef and Rio Baker rivers, with its unfathomably powerful waterfall, draws visitors from hundreds of miles in every direction. Just a short 10-minute drive from the lodge, you can visit the confluence and hike down to a perch just above the falls. Get up-close-and-personal to one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in all of Chilean Patagonia.

Cooking Classes

Without leaving the comforts of the lodge, you can enjoy a cooking class with the lodge’s professionally trained chef. Learn to cook Chilean classics like empanadas and asado — Chile’s famed barbeque of lamb, beef, chicken, pork, chorizo and more over an open fire called a parrilla. You’ll even get a chance to try your hand at traditional Patagonian deserts like arrope de uvas, picarones, la oveja, and rhubarb tart.

Taste beautiful Chilean wines.

Wine Tasting and Presentation

Enjoy a visit from a sommelier or wine expert for a presentation on Chilean wines. Taste beautiful Chilean wines as you learn about Chile’s wine regions and wine styles, and how to pair Chilean wines with food.

Extras and Add-Ons

If the expansive standard menu of activities and inclusions still leaves you wanting more, you can further enhance your trip with select add-ons and a la carte experiences. Patagonia

Patagonia Baker Lodge

The mighty Rio Baker is perhaps Chile’s most iconic and beautiful river. Well-known to fly fishers, kayakers and rafters which have floated its glacially-tinged waters for decades, the Baker received worldwide recognition in 2014 when an enormous civic action campaign saved the river from a massive dam and hydroelectric power project that would have destroyed the river’s raw, wild nature and untarnished ecosystem. Thanks to that campaign, today the Baker still flows free and wild.
