Seven anglers. Seven days. A Texas redfish odyssey.

March 25th by Chris Hunt

HOSTED TRAVEL: BAY FLATS LODGE, JUNE 1-8, 2027

Along the pristine south Texas Gulf Coast lies a protected inshore fishery that literally bursts with life. Here, hoards of burly redfish — some up to 20 pounds or more — prowl the oyster beds and hidden mangrove channels for shrimp, crabs, and baitfish. For anglers, the emerald waters of San Antonio Bay and Matagorda Island offer spectacular sight-casting to cruising and tailing reds. From the casting platform on a skinny-water flats skiff, fly-casters will find themselves in a vast, salty paradise, where the fish are plentiful and opportunistic. Redfish are predators, and they'll willingly bust up under a well-cast popper or Gurgler — anything that "struggles" on the surface will very likely get a look.

A burly red grabs a Gurgler

Late next spring — June 1-8, 2027 — we're hosting seven anglers for seven nights and six days of guided fly fishing for these unruly inshore game fish that will test any fly-caster's mettle. From the uber-comfortable confines of Bay Flats Lodge, we'll launch aboard flats skiffs and explore the wild waters of this rich ecosystem. In addition to redfish, anglers can target speckled trout, black drum, the wily sheepshead, and, on warm, calm mornings in the barrier island cuts, there's a chance to tie into truly big jack crevalle in the 40-pound range. This latter fishery is a bit of a wildcard, but we've planned our hosted trip around the ideal moonphase for these pelagic predators — if they're around, and you're willing to chase them, there's a chance we can make it happen.

Our hosted trip aligns with the ideal conditions for big jacks off the Texas coast

While the jacks will be a tempting quarry, they're hardly a "sure thing" for fly fishers. The adventure entails a lot of searching, rough inshore waters, and a bit of luck. But have no fear — the real reason we're hosting anglers out of Bay Flats Lodge is the incomparble Texas redfish. Considered by many southern inshore fly fishers to be the ideal fly-rod quarry on the flats, these aggressive predators will test any 8-weight fly rod, and they can be remarkably forgiving for new-to-the-salt anglers. The flats are massive, the June weather should be warm, but not yet sweltering, and the fishing should be excellent.

The endless flats of San Antonio Bay

Lest you think this is just another subtle coastal retreat, think again. Bay Flats Lodge is situated mere steps from the bay and within an easy drive of Houston, San Antonio, Austin, or Corpus Christi. The lodge is absolutely gorgeous, with thoughtful outdoor gathering areas, plush private accommodations in either lodge rooms or, for our group, an entire coastal home replete with indoor and outdoor gathering areas, thoughtfully decorated environs, spacious bathrooms, and total comfort. The lodge's meals are spectacular, and evening appetizers in the outdoor bar are to die for. This tasteful destination is a first-class retreat, replete with some of the best fly fishing for redfish in the United States.
