Best solo-angler trip: The Tropics

January 19th by Chris Hunt

Ocean Breeze Villa Guesthouse

Like most fly fishing lodges anywhere else, lodges in tropical locales tend to base their rates on double occupancy — two to a room and two to a boat with one guide for both anglers. But, because we try to be creative and work with solo anglers to find affordable travel and fishing options, we might have the ideal tropical destination for singles who like to travel and fish alone.

Have you ever considered fly fishing the flats of Roatan? This Honduran island is about 30 miles off the coast of the mainland, nestled into the little crook of Central America. It’s a safe and friendly alternative to the more gritty experience visitors to the mainland might experience. Roatan’s life blood is its tourism, and it’s hugely popular with divers and it’s growing in popularity with tropical tourists looking for something a bit different.

But, where we send our clients, to the chill and quiet East End of the island, a great little fly fishing destination awaits. Here at Ocean Breeze Villa, the single angler can visit for a few days or even a couple of weeks and enjoy lodge-like amenities without having to put up with a snoring fishing buddy or a lodge full of strangers. Angling is quite good for bonefish and tarpon, and Roatan is quietly becoming a permit hotspot. If you haven’t considered it, now’s the time to do so.

The Villa includes a very nicely appointed guesthouse that features hotel-style rooms, each with its own bathroom. And a full-service trip to the Villa would include three daily meals served in the guesthouse kitchen or in the courtyard, daily guided fly fishing and access to the tidal pool at the Reef House right next door. Additionally, clients staying in the guesthouse have access to the Villa’s private dock — if you like snorkeling, the Mesoamerican Reef is literally right there and accessible by stepping off the end of the dock.

And the rate? Check this out:

5 nights/4 days guided fishing, single room, private guide from the Ocean Breeze Villa guesthouse: $4,610 per angler.
