Abaco Lodge rises from the ashes, reopens April 1
Just over three years ago, Hurricane Dorian parked over Abaco in the Bahamas and refused to move. For a full 36 hours, the Category 5 storm flattened the island. It officially claimed 74 lives on Abaco alone (another 22 perished on nearby Grand Bahama). But nearly 250 people are still missing, and the storm left almost 30,000 Bahamians homeless.
Yet, somehow, the people of the island persisted. Through unparalleled resolve and persistence, they are rebuilding. And, in early 2023, the storied Abaco Lodge will reopen to guests for the first time since before Dorian delivered its destruction. And that means, for the first time since the summer of 2019, fly fishers will have access to the storied Marls of Abaco.
With more than 200 square miles of unpressured, pristine bonefish habitat, Abaco is (and always has been) one of the best places in the world to tangle with trophy bonefish. And the lodge is going to be brand new, down to every fixture, every comfortable bed and barstool. And it will boast brand-new Maverick flats skiffs, too, to help anglers glide across the Marls in search of the gray ghosts that make this island one of the most unique in the fly fishing universe.
Over the years, Abaco Lodge has become known not just as a jumping-off point for some of the world’s best bonefishing, but also for its luxury, its unparalleled service and for its fine dining. Additionally, the community, and the welcoming island culture of Abaco and Marsh Harbour have won over the hearts of many an angler — it’s a great place to bring non-angling spouses or partners, with lots to do and see. The lodge comes equipped with an inviting pool with ocean views, and there always seems to be a cold Kalilk within reach.
While bonefish are the primary target for anglers visiting Abaco, it’s also a great place to visit in search of tarpon and big permit. It’s also the only fly fishing lodge in the Marls, meaning it’ll be you, a maximum of seven other guests and your guide out there searching the flats for fish. Want variety? Abaco’s guides know every blue hole where giant barracudas lie in wait, and the lodge can work with you to spend a day on blue water, chasing marlin, dorado, wahoo and tuna.
Even better? Getting to Abaco is simple. In fact, it may be the easiest Bahamian destination to reach from the mainland U.S., with daily direct flights to Marsh Harbour via Delta, American and Silver (a United affiliate) airlines. No long customs lines in Nassau or Freeport … no need for an overnight stay with no fishing involved (but, if you do want to take in the Nassau nightlife, there are still daily flights from Nassau to Marsh Harbour).
Hatch Adventure Travel would love to help you be among the first to visit the rebuilt Abaco Lodge and among the first to chase 4- to 8-pound bonefish on the Marls in three seasons. The lodge will fill up fast.
